Phil Roeber, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, 1981

American, 1913-1997, Roeber painted at the California School of Fine Arts in the 1940s and 50s when artists like Richard Diebenkorn and Clifford Still were establishing what came to be known as the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism. He went to New York in the 1960s and hooked up with Robert Motherwell, who was said to have named him the best collagist in America. Although he is firmly inscribed in the history of west coast abstract painting, he exhibited less and less frequently as time went on and ended up dying in near total obscurity.
